Abington, MA (September 9, 2025) – Several people were hurt after a police pursuit ended in a multi-vehicle crash involving an Abington Police cruiser on Sunday, September 7.

Authorities said the incident began around 5:30 p.m. on September 7 when dispatch received multiple calls about an erratic driver entering Abington from Holbrook.

The driver, later identified as 43-year-old Michael Lydon of Holbrook, was reportedly swerving into oncoming traffic, running red lights, and fleeing from a prior hit-and-run. Police confirmed the vehicle had been stolen.

Officers spotted the damaged vehicle on Centre Avenue near Cottage Street. When police attempted a traffic stop, Lydon failed to stop and continued toward Rockland. Near a Stop & Shop parking lot, the suspect’s vehicle narrowly avoided a collision. Moments later, another vehicle struck a police cruiser, forcing it into the opposite lane, where it hit a stationary car.

Lydon’s pursuit continued into Rockland before his vehicle spun out near North Ave and Adams St. He then fled on foot but was quickly taken into custody. Officers recovered a discarded airsoft gun during the chase.

Police said Lydon appeared impaired and was transported to a hospital. He was found to have three outstanding warrants and now faces multiple charges, including OUI drugs, resisting arrest, and operating to endanger.

Two people from the vehicles and one Abington officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not ruled out additional charges.

We extend our wishes for recovery to all injured in this incident.

Police Chase Accidents in Massachusetts

Police pursuits are dangerous events that place not only officers and suspects at risk but also the public. In Massachusetts, densely populated communities and busy roadways make

crashes during chases more likely. Innocent drivers, passengers, and pedestrians often suffer injuries when a fleeing driver causes a collision.

High-speed chases can lead to serious outcomes, including multi-vehicle accidents, rollovers, and head-on crashes. Even when speeds are moderate, the unpredictability of a fleeing driver increases the risk of harm. Suspects often run red lights, drive against traffic, or make sudden maneuvers to escape. Police must weigh the dangers of pursuit against the need to apprehend suspects.

Victims of crashes caused during pursuits often face long recoveries. Injuries may range from broken bones and head trauma to whiplash and psychological distress. On top of physical recovery, victims can face mounting medical bills and missed work. When police vehicles are involved, questions about liability and insurance can add complexity.

Massachusetts law allows those injured in pursuit-related crashes to seek compensation. Victims may be entitled to recover damages for medical care, lost income, and pain and suffering. A proficient car accident lawyer can help by investigating the circumstances, reviewing police reports, and negotiating with insurance companies. Legal guidance is often critical when determining whether responsibility lies with the fleeing driver, another motorist, or even law enforcement.
