Block Island, RI (July 30, 2025) – One person was killed and two others were injured when a small private aircraft crashed this afternoon at Block Island State Airport.

According to officials, the incident occurred around 12:29 p.m. when a Cherokee Archer plane, carrying three individuals from New York, crashed at the end of the runway. The aircraft reportedly flipped over and came to rest upside down in a wooded area beyond the airstrip.

Authorities confirmed that a 76-year-old male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two passengers—a man and a woman, both in their 70s—were seriously injured and airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital on the mainland for treatment.

Block Island Police Chief Paul Deane stated that the plane appeared to be making its third attempt to land at the time of the crash. Witnesses reported that the pilot may have overshot the runway on final approach, using up too much space and ultimately running out of room to safely stop.

The plane had departed Albany International Airport at 10:50 a.m. and was owned by Condair Flyers Flying Club. Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including local police, fire crews, and rescue teams, responded quickly to the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are leading the investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The identities of those involved have not yet been released.

Aviation Accidents and Legal Rights for Victims

Small plane crashes in Rhode Island, though rare, often lead to devastating outcomes. Victims and families affected by such tragedies may face long recoveries, significant medical expenses, or permanent loss. In cases like the Block Island crash, where an aircraft appears to have experienced landing difficulties, federal investigators will closely examine all contributing factors—including pilot experience, mechanical conditions, weather, and air traffic communications.

When a private or club-operated aircraft is involved, multiple parties may potentially share liability, including the pilot, the aircraft’s owner, or even maintenance providers. If negligence played a role—such as a preventable pilot error, poor runway management, or improper aircraft maintenance—those injured or the families of those killed may be entitled to pursue legal action.

Surviving victims may be eligible to seek compensation for medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and emotional distress. Families of deceased victims may have grounds for a wrongful death lawsuit, which can help cover funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and future financial support.
