Bourne, MA (August 23, 2025) – On the evening of August 22, a serious two-vehicle crash on Route 25 atop the Bourne Bridge resulted in multiple injuries and criminal charges against a Maine man, according to the Massachusetts State Police. The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m., when a Ford F-250 pickup truck rear-ended an SUV traveling along the bridge.
All travel lanes were shut down to allow emergency personnel full access to the scene. Three people inside the SUV were injured in the collision. They were transported to local hospitals for medical evaluation and treatment, with one individual requiring specialized trauma care due to the severity of their injuries.
During the course of their investigation, Troopers determined that the driver of the Ford F-250, identified as Garret Mullen, 37, of Lewiston, Maine, appeared impaired. Further search revealed he was also in illegal possession of a loaded firearm and related ammunition. He was taken into custody and is expected to be arraigned in Falmouth District Court on Monday.
Mullen faces several charges including felony OUI causing serious injury, illegal firearm possession, and multiple misdemeanors and civil violations. The bridge was reopened to traffic around 10:40 p.m.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
DUI Accidents in Massachusetts

Driving under the influence continues to be a leading cause of Massachusetts accidents, many of which result in severe injuries or death. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation notes that impaired driving is a contributing factor in a significant portion of yearly traffic incidents. In response, law enforcement agencies conduct regular patrols and sobriety checks to keep roads safer. Awareness and legal accountability remain key components in reducing these types of crashes.
Understanding how DUI crashes affect victims and their families often reveals challenges that extend beyond the initial impact. Here's a look at some of the long-term complications victims may face:
Extended Rehabilitation: Injuries from DUI accidents often require more than a short hospital stay. Victims may need surgeries, physical therapy, and home modifications. This can extend over months, affecting both physical health and emotional stability.
Legal Hurdles for Victims: While the at-fault driver faces criminal charges, victims must still manage civil claims to seek compensation. This process can be complex, especially when dealing with insurance companies and out-of-state defendants.
Psychological Trauma: Many victims of impaired drivers suffer from anxiety, depression, or flashbacks. These emotional scars may last long after physical wounds heal, impacting work, relationships, and everyday life.
Loss of Transportation: A totaled vehicle can be a major setback, especially for families relying on that car for daily needs. Delays in repairs or insurance disputes can leave victims stranded and stressed.
Unexpected Financial Strain: Medical costs, vehicle damage, and time away from work can quickly deplete savings. For families living paycheck to paycheck, this adds additional emotional pressure during recovery.
