Bristol, RI (July 1, 2025) – A motorcyclist was hurt in a collision that took place Monday, June 30, in Bristol. Police say the crash occurred when 66-year-old Frank Francis Jr., of Warwick, was riding his motorcycle along Hope Street and collided with a car that was turning into Colt Park. The vehicle, driven by 76-year-old Susan Abilheira of Bristol, was making the turn when the two collided, throwing Francis from his bike.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and provided immediate care before transporting Francis to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The extent of his injuries has not been fully disclosed at this time. Local authorities are continuing to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors. Images from the scene showed police cruisers near the damaged motorcycle, which was later towed away.

We send our best wishes to Frank Francis Jr. for a full and speedy recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in Rhode Island

Motorcycle accidents remain a serious concern throughout Rhode Island. Due to the limited protection motorcycles offer, riders are far more likely to suffer severe injuries in collisions compared to those in passenger vehicles. According to recent state data, motorcycle crashes contribute significantly to roadway fatalities and life-altering injuries each year. Staying vigilant on local roads can help prevent more tragedies like this one. It’s important for riders and drivers alike to understand the common causes behind motorcycle accidents:

  • Left-Turn Accidents: One of the most common causes of motorcycle crashes is when a driver turns left across a motorcyclist’s path. Drivers often misjudge a motorcycle’s speed or fail to see the bike altogether. Riders should approach intersections cautiously and be prepared to take evasive action if necessary.

  • Failure to Yield Right-of-Way: Some crashes happen because drivers do not yield when they should. Intersections, driveways, and parking lot exits are common sites for these collisions. Motorcyclists can reduce their risk by wearing bright gear and making themselves as visible as possible.

  • Road Hazards and Debris: Potholes, loose gravel, or unexpected debris pose a greater risk to motorcycles than to other vehicles. Even a small obstacle can cause a rider to lose control. Staying alert and scanning the road ahead helps riders react quickly to hazards.

  • Inexperienced Riders or Drivers: Lack of experience can play a role in crashes. Riders and drivers unfamiliar with sharing the road with motorcycles may make dangerous moves. Ongoing training and defensive riding techniques are key for staying safe.
