Charlton, MA (August 21, 2025) – A motorcyclist lost his life following a collision with a minivan Tuesday evening in Charlton.

The crash occurred around 5:00 p.m. on August 19, near the intersection of Rte 20 (Worcester Rd) and H Putnam Rd Ext. According to the Charlton Police Department, emergency crews responded after several calls reported a serious collision.

When officers and firefighters arrived, they discovered a 2022 Kia Carnival minivan and a 2025 Kawasaki ZR900 motorcycle with extensive damage. Investigators said the minivan was heading west on Rte 20 and turned onto H Putnam Rd Ext. During the turn, the vehicle collided with the motorcycle, which was traveling east on Rte 20.

The motorcyclist suffered critical injuries. Paramedics transported him to UMass-Memorial University Campus, where he later died. His identity has not yet been released.

The minivan driver was not injured and remained on the scene to cooperate with authorities. Multiple agencies, including the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, are assisting Charlton Police with the investigation.

Authorities have not released further details regarding potential contributing factors. The investigation is ongoing. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim during this difficult time.

Motorcycle Accidents in Massachusetts

Motorcycle crashes are among the most devastating types of roadway accidents in Massachusetts. Riders face heightened risks because they lack the structural protection that

ree

cars and trucks provide. Even with helmets and protective gear, motorcyclists are far more likely to suffer catastrophic or fatal injuries when struck by larger vehicles.

Data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation shows that motorcycle accidents make up a small percentage of overall crashes but a disproportionately high percentage of roadway fatalities. Intersections, like the one in Charlton, often prove especially dangerous. Drivers may misjudge a rider’s speed, overlook a motorcycle in their blind spot, or fail to yield the right of way. A moment’s distraction can result in life-altering consequences.

Common causes of motorcycle accidents include distracted driving, speeding, and unsafe turns. In many cases, drivers of passenger vehicles fail to notice motorcyclists until it is too late. Unfortunately, motorcyclists almost always bear the brunt of these collisions, suffering severe injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, and internal trauma. These injuries can require long-term medical care and prevent victims from returning to work, creating significant financial stress for families.

Families who lose a loved one in a motorcycle crash may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Compensation in these cases can help cover funeral costs, lost future income, and the emotional toll of losing a family member. For survivors of non-fatal crashes, a personal injury claim may provide financial recovery for hospital bills, physical therapy, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

It is essential to work with an experienced Massachusetts motorcycle accident lawyer who understands both state traffic laws and the challenges riders face. A knowledgeable attorney can conduct a thorough investigation, collect evidence, and advocate for fair compensation. By handling communications with insurers and building a strong case, legal counsel gives families space to grieve and heal.
