Chicopee, MA (June 11, 2025) – Early Tuesday morning, a Massachusetts State Trooper was seriously injured during a traffic stop on Interstate 90 when they were hit by a vehicle that then left the scene. The incident occurred near Exit 51 on the westbound side of the highway around 2:20 a.m. on June 10.

Police and emergency medical teams responded to the scene where they found the injured trooper on the roadside. The trooper had been struck while conducting a stop, and the driver responsible reportedly fled the area before backup arrived. Paramedics transported the injured trooper to Baystate Medical Center. Authorities say the trooper remains in stable condition.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Naisha Rodriguez of Springfield, was located and arrested hours after the crash. She appeared in Chicopee District Court on Wednesday and faces multiple charges, including operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash causing personal injury, and misleading police during the investigation.

Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble acknowledged the seriousness of the trooper's injuries but expressed relief that they do not appear to be life-threatening. The crash remains under investigation by state authorities.

We hope the injured trooper recovers quickly.

Hit-and-Run Accidents in Massachusetts

Every year in Massachusetts, hundreds of people are injured in hit-and-run accidents. These collisions can cause major disruptions, especially when emergency response is delayed. Data from the state reveals that impaired driving and driver inattention are significant factors. Victims of hit-and-run accidents are often left dealing with physical, emotional, and financial consequences.

Here are some important facts about driver impairment and how it affects roadway safety:

  • Alcohol and Drug Use Behind the Wheel: Operating under the influence is a leading cause of serious accidents. Reaction times are significantly delayed, and judgment is impaired, making it dangerous for both the driver and others on the road.

  • Impact on Law Enforcement and Emergency Personnel: Drivers under the influence can cause harm not only to other motorists but also to those working to keep our roads safe. This includes police officers, firefighters, and EMTs who are often at greater risk during roadside duties.

  • Legal Consequences for Impaired Driving: Penalties for driving under the influence in Massachusetts are severe, especially when bodily harm is caused. Offenders can face jail time, fines, and license suspension, as well as civil lawsuits filed by the injured parties.

  • Identifying Impaired Drivers: Law enforcement and concerned citizens play a vital role in identifying potentially dangerous drivers. Signs include erratic driving, slow response at signals, and swerving across lanes.
