Cranston, RI (June 25, 2025) – A Rhode Island State Police trooper was injured in a multi-vehicle crash that unfolded Tuesday afternoon, June 24, along the southbound side of Interstate 95 in Cranston.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. as the trooper, a member of the Commercial Enforcement Unit, was conducting a roadside inspection of a tractor-trailer in the breakdown lane close to the Jefferson Boulevard exit. Authorities reported that the trooper’s unmarked pickup truck was parked with its emergency lights flashing when a minivan veered off the roadway and collided into the rear of the vehicle.

The force of the collision pushed the pickup truck into the back of the stopped tractor-trailer, trapping the trooper inside. Emergency personnel responded swiftly to extract the trooper from the vehicle. He was then transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Meanwhile, the driver of the minivan was taken to Kent Hospital after reporting pain, according to investigators. The driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed. Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash, and it is not yet clear whether any charges will be filed.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Car Accidents in Rhode Island

Motor vehicle accidents in Rhode Island are a leading cause of injuries each year. Data from the state shows that hundreds of crashes result in serious injuries or worse annually. Many of these accidents occur on busy roadways like I-95, where speed and congestion often increase the risk of collisions. It’s important for victims to understand their rights following any type of vehicle crash. Here’s a closer look at some common types of injuries that can happen in highway collisions:

  • Whiplash and Soft Tissue Injuries: These are among the most common injuries and result from the sudden back-and-forth motion of the head and neck during impact. Victims may suffer from lingering pain, headaches, or reduced mobility, even in what seem to be minor crashes.

  • Broken Bones and Fractures: High-impact accidents often lead to broken ribs, arms, legs, or facial bones. These injuries usually require extended recovery times, surgeries, and physical therapy to regain full strength and mobility.

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): TBIs can occur when the head strikes a hard surface or experiences a violent jolt. Even mild TBIs, such as concussions, can have lasting effects, including memory problems, dizziness, or emotional changes.

  • Internal Injuries: The blunt force of a crash can harm internal organs without visible symptoms right away. These injuries can be life-threatening and may require emergency surgery or long-term care.

  • Spinal Cord Injuries: Damage to the spinal cord may lead to partial or full paralysis. These cases typically involve extensive rehabilitation and life adjustments for the victim and their family.
