Dartmouth, MA (July 28, 2025) – Two teenagers tragically lost their lives Saturday, July 26, in a serious crash on Interstate 195 West in Dartmouth.
The accident occurred around 1:35 p.m. near the 19.4 mile marker, close to the Reed Rd exit. Authorities say only one vehicle, a 2006 Chevy Equinox, was involved. The impact was so forceful that the engine was dislodged from the vehicle.
Both occupants were ejected from the car. They were identified as 19-year-old Kevin Dos Santos Lopes of New Bedford and 18-year-old Amilton De Pina Semedo of Pawtucket, RI. Emergency crews rushed both teens to a local hospital, but they were later pronounced dead.
The crash is not considered suspicious. The Massachusetts State Police and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office continue to investigate the cause.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of Kevin Dos Santos Lopes and Amilton De Pina Semedo during this heartbreaking time.
Teen Fatalities and Single-Car Accidents in Massachusetts
Single-vehicle crashes may seem less complex than multi-car collisions, but they often have tragic consequences. In Massachusetts, these types of accidents frequently involve speed,

loss of control, or distracted driving. When young drivers are involved, the risk increases due to inexperience behind the wheel and sometimes poor road conditions.
In Dartmouth and other areas along I-195, long stretches of highway can make drivers feel more comfortable than they should. A simple overcorrection, tire blowout, or moment of distraction can result in a crash with devastating outcomes. The impact of this recent accident was so severe that the vehicle's engine separated from the body — a strong indication of high speed or a violent collision with a fixed object.
Losing a loved one in a car crash leaves emotional pain and often financial hardship. Families may face funeral costs, medical bills, and the sudden loss of future support. In such cases, working with a personal injury attorney can help loved ones understand their rights. A lawyer can investigate the crash, assess liability, and pursue compensation where applicable. Even in single-car crashes, questions may arise about vehicle defects, poor road design, or the actions of other drivers nearby.
Tragedies like this remind us how fragile life can be on the road — especially for young people. Preventing more of these incidents means promoting education, safe driving habits, and accountability when negligence plays a role.
