Dudley, MA (June 22, 2025) – A tragic crash claimed the life of a 43-year-old man on the night of June 19 after his moped collided with a work van in Dudley. The accident happened around 9:23 p.m. near 20 Oxford Avenue.
Police and fire crews arrived to find a heavily damaged moped and a Chevrolet work van at the scene. The man operating the moped was found critically injured. Officers on scene began performing life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived to take over. The victim was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he later died from his injuries.
The Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council’s accident reconstruction team has been brought in to investigate the incident. Authorities have not released the name of the deceased. The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office is managing all inquiries as the investigation continues.
This portion of Oxford Avenue, like many local roads, can be difficult to navigate after dark. Moped riders are especially vulnerable in collisions involving larger vehicles. Officials have not yet indicated whether any charges will be filed in connection with the crash.
Our sincere condolences go out to the loved ones of the victim during this incredibly difficult time.
Moped Accidents in Massachusetts

Across Massachusetts, moped and scooter riders face serious safety risks on public roads. Because of their size and limited speed, mopeds are often overlooked by drivers of larger vehicles. In 2023, the state reported over 300 moped-related crashes, many of which resulted in hospitalization or worse. Even with helmets and reflective gear, these riders have limited protection when crashes occur. It's important to understand the dangers these vehicles present. Below are some key risks associated with moped accidents:
Limited Visibility to Drivers: Due to their small profile, mopeds are often harder for drivers to see, especially at night or in heavy traffic. Many collisions occur because a driver simply fails to notice a moped until it's too late.
Lack of Structural Protection: Unlike cars or trucks, mopeds offer no metal frame, airbags, or crumple zones to absorb impact. As a result, even low-speed collisions can result in broken bones, internal injuries, or death.
Unforgiving Road Conditions: Rough pavement, potholes, or loose gravel can be dangerous for small-wheeled mopeds. While cars can usually manage these conditions, they can easily throw a moped rider off balance.
Difficulty Keeping Up with Traffic: Mopeds may not be able to travel at the same speed as surrounding vehicles, particularly on busy or fast-moving roads. This speed difference can create risky situations, especially when other drivers are impatient or aggressive.
