East Greenwich, RI (September 12, 2025) – A serious crash in East Greenwich left one person injured after a car struck a building on Wednesday, September 10.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. at 1000 Division Street. Responding officers found a vehicle that had crashed into Restore Hyper Wellness. Inside the car, police discovered an unconscious passenger who required immediate medical attention. Emergency crews transported the injured individual to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities said the driver, identified as 44-year-old David Hickey, and another passenger fled the scene before officers arrived. Both were located shortly after. According to reports, Hickey appeared to be covered in a white, powdery substance believed to be fentanyl.
A Rhode Island State Police K-9 was also exposed to the substance and required Narcan treatment. All three individuals, including Hickey, were taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Hickey now faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a chemical test, obstruction, and failure to stop after an accident with injury.
The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
We extend our heartfelt wishes for recovery to those injured in this crash.
Car Accidents in Rhode Island
Car accidents in Rhode Island happen daily, and many involve serious injuries or complex

circumstances, like suspected impairment or driver misconduct. Crashes involving drugs or alcohol often cause devastating outcomes because impaired drivers cannot react quickly or make safe decisions. Victims of these accidents frequently face long hospital stays, ongoing medical care, and emotional trauma.
One of the most concerning aspects of impaired driving crashes is how quickly they turn routine travel into a medical emergency. In this case, the collision into a business not only endangered passengers but also posed risks to bystanders and responding officers. Situations involving substances, such as fentanyl, increase danger for everyone involved, including first responders.
Across Rhode Island, driving under the influence remains a leading cause of collisions that result in injury. State records show hundreds of arrests each year for impaired driving, but many more accidents go unreported until tragedy strikes. These cases highlight how important it is for injured individuals and families to understand their rights after an accident.
Victims often face challenges beyond their physical injuries. Medical bills, missed time at work, and uncertainty about recovery add to the stress. A Rhode Island DUI crash lawyer can help by investigating the crash, gathering evidence, and building a strong claim for compensation. Legal support may also ease the burden of dealing with insurance companies, which often try to minimize payouts.
Compensation in Rhode Island car accident cases can include coverage for medical expenses, lost wages, rehabilitation, and even pain and suffering. Each case is unique, but having legal guidance helps victims fight for fair results. Prompt action is especially important because evidence and witness accounts may fade over time.
