East Longmeadow, MA (August 26, 2025) – A Westfield mail carrier faces drunk driving charges after striking a pedestrian and multiple vehicles on Tuesday morning, August 26.
Police report the incident occurred near the Pride gas station at the center rotary around 9:39 a.m. Responding officers found a pedestrian seriously injured. First aid was administered at the scene before the victim was transported to Baystate Medical Center by the Longmeadow Fire Department. The person remains in serious but stable condition.
Witnesses described the mail truck hitting several cars and narrowly missing pedestrians and gas station staff. Police say the driver left the first crash scene heading north on Elm Street. Shortly afterward, the same vehicle struck Peoples Bank at 201 North Main St., confirming the same driver was involved.
Authorities identified the driver as 54-year-old Robert O’Sullivan of Westfield. He was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including operating under the influence, causing serious bodily injury. O’Sullivan is scheduled for arraignment at Palmer District Court later Tuesday.
The East Longmeadow Police Department, together with the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, continues investigating the circumstances of these crashes.
We extend our hopes for a full recovery to the individual injured in this incident.
Pedestrian Accidents in East Longmeadow
Pedestrian accidents pose a serious risk in Massachusetts communities, even in smaller

towns like East Longmeadow. Each year, hundreds of pedestrians are injured in collisions involving vehicles, including commercial and delivery trucks. These accidents often result from driver impairment, speeding, distracted driving, or failure to yield at crosswalks.
Pedestrians struck by vehicles may suffer severe injuries. Common outcomes include broken bones, head trauma, and internal injuries, all of which may require extended hospitalization and rehabilitation. Even when injuries are not life-threatening, recovery can take months, impacting daily routines and long-term mobility.
High-traffic areas such as gas stations, busy intersections, and commercial zones are particularly dangerous. Pedestrians in these locations are at risk of being struck while crossing streets or walking near parked vehicles. Accidents involving larger vehicles, like mail or delivery trucks, can be especially severe due to the vehicle’s size and weight.
After a pedestrian accident, seeking legal guidance is crucial. A skilled pedestrian accident lawyer can help victims gather evidence, communicate with insurance companies, and pursue compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain, and suffering. Legal professionals also assist families in navigating complex cases, particularly when a commercial driver or company vehicle is involved.
