East Providence, RI (August 9, 2025) – Two people were rushed to the hospital early Friday morning after a sedan collided with a stopped garbage truck in East Providence. Police reported that the crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. on August 8 at the intersection of Mink Street and Wampanoag Trail, where a Mega Disposal trash truck was waiting at a traffic light.
According to East Providence police, the sedan struck the rear of the truck, leaving both occupants of the car injured. The female passenger was trapped inside and had to be freed using the jaws of life before being taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the sedan was also hospitalized with serious injuries.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash, but they indicated that charges may be filed pending the outcome of the investigation. The garbage truck driver was not reported to be injured.
We hope the two people injured in this collision are able to make a full and swift recovery.
Car Accidents in Rhode Island

In Rhode Island, collisions involving large trucks or commercial vehicles often lead to severe injuries due to the size and weight of these vehicles. State records show that rear-end accidents are among the most common crash types, frequently caused by inattention or following too closely. These incidents can result in extended hospital stays, high medical bills, and significant time away from work for victims. Here are several common factors that can lead to crashes like this:
Driver Distraction: Looking away from the road, even briefly, can prevent a driver from noticing stopped traffic ahead in time to brake.
Following Too Closely: Tailgating reduces the reaction time needed to avoid collisions, especially when approaching large trucks that may block a driver’s forward view.
Speed in High-Traffic Areas: Traveling too fast near intersections or stoplights increases the risk of hitting stationary vehicles.
Poor Visibility: Fog, rain, or low morning light can make it harder to judge distances, contributing to rear-end collisions.
