East Providence, RI (June 21, 2025) – A large fire erupted early Saturday morning, June 21, at a triple-decker residence on Teofilo Braga Way near Veterans Memorial Parkway and the East Bay Bike Path in East Providence. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after 6:00 a.m. following reports of a structure fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met with significant flames and smoke pouring from the home. As of 7:30 a.m., efforts to extinguish the fire were still underway. A photographer from NBC 10 on the scene reported visible damage to the building as crews continued hosing down the structure. The fire caused disruptions along Veterans Memorial Parkway, and cyclists were temporarily turned away from a section of the bike path for safety reasons.
East Providence Fire Chief Michael Carey confirmed that one individual was taken to a nearby hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation. In addition, part of the home’s interior floor gave way during the incident, leading to minor injuries among responding firefighters.
Mutual aid was provided by neighboring departments, including Providence. The American Red Cross and the Providence Canteen were also on site to assist displaced residents and provide support. Authorities have deemed the house a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.
We hope those injured in this fire recover fully and quickly.
House Fires in Rhode Island

In Rhode Island, house fires pose an ongoing risk, particularly in older residential neighborhoods where many homes were built without modern fire safety systems. Fires often spread quickly and lead to severe property damage or injury, especially when emergency response is delayed due to location or structural hazards. Despite statewide efforts in fire prevention education and inspections, residential fires remain a significant concern for Rhode Island communities. Recovering after a house fire is emotionally and financially overwhelming. Below are some of the key factors victims should be aware of:
Structural Dangers: Fire-damaged homes may be unstable, with weakened floors, walls, and ceilings. Returning to inspect or retrieve belongings should only be done with professional supervision.
Smoke Inhalation Risks: Even if flames don’t reach all parts of a house, smoke can cause serious lung and respiratory damage. Symptoms might not appear immediately, making it critical to seek medical attention.
Insurance Challenges: Navigating insurance claims after a fire can be complicated. It’s vital to document damage thoroughly and understand policy coverage, exclusions, and deadlines.
Temporary Displacement: Many fire victims are forced to leave their homes for extended periods. Emergency housing, emotional support, and basic needs must be addressed promptly.
Emotional Impact: House fires often result in the loss of irreplaceable items and a sense of safety. Counseling and community support can be important steps in recovery.
