Fall River, MA (July 17, 2025) – Officials have confirmed a tenth death following the tragic fire at Gabriel House in Fall River. Brenda Cropper, 66, passed away on Thursday, July 17, from injuries she sustained during Sunday night’s devastating blaze.

Cropper had been hospitalized in critical condition since the five-alarm fire broke out at the assisted-living facility, which housed around 70 residents. Her death was confirmed by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday.

The other deceased residents have been named as Rui Albernaz, 64; Ronald Codega, 61; Margaret Duddy, 69; Robert King, 78; Kim Mackin, 71; Richard Rochon, 78; Eleanor Willett, 86; and Joseph Wilansky, 77. The identity of one female victim, aged 70, has not been made public.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon spoke emotionally about the rescue efforts. He said the fire was “destined to kill 50-plus people” but credited his team’s heroic actions for saving dozens of lives.

“Our firefighters were faced with people in windows and had to decide who to rescue first,” Bacon said. One first responder pushed through thick black smoke to break into rooms and pull nonambulatory residents to safety. Another crew member battled flames blowing out of the front door, knocking down the fire quickly enough to save many residents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation but does not appear suspicious, according to authorities.

Investigators continue to look into what sparked this tragic event. We extend our sincere wishes for recovery to all those injured in this incident.

Assisted-Living Facility Fires in Massachusetts

Fires at assisted-living facilities are rare but often devastating, especially for older adults who need extra help with mobility. The recent tragedy at Gabriel House in Fall River shows how quickly a fire can turn deadly when residents cannot escape on their own.

Older adults living in group homes or assisted-living settings are at higher risk of injury

during fires. Many are nonambulatory or have serious health conditions that make evacuation difficult. This is why fire safety systems, like alarms and sprinklers, are so important in these facilities.

Unfortunately, even with fire safety equipment, tragedies can still happen. Fires can start from electrical issues, cooking accidents, or personal items like space heaters or cigarettes. Quick-spreading fires can overwhelm older residents and staff before help arrives.

Victims of fires, including injured residents and their families, have the right to seek justice. In Massachusetts, personal injury or wrongful death claims may help victims recover compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and funeral costs. In cases of negligence, such as unsafe buildings or poor fire safety procedures, legal action may help prevent future tragedies.

After a major fire, it is important for victims and families to get legal guidance. An experienced attorney can investigate the cause of the fire and determine if safety regulations were followed. Legal teams also help families communicate with insurance companies and fight for fair compensation.
