Fall River, MA (July 13, 2025) – A fire at the Gabriel House Assisted Living Residence on Oliver Street resulted in multiple deaths and several injuries late Sunday night. According to Fall River Fire Department Chief Jeffrey Bacon, crews were dispatched to the facility around 9:30 p.m. on July 13 after reports of a fire in the building’s main entrance area.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames and smoke coming from the front of the building and several residents waiting at their windows for help. Fall River Police officers who got there first broke down doors to assist residents out of their apartments. Officials said about a dozen non-ambulatory residents were physically carried out by police officers, actions that likely prevented further injuries.

Chief Bacon confirmed that multiple people died as a result of the fire, though the exact number has not yet been released. Several residents were also transported to local and regional hospitals for treatment. Five firefighters were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.

The fire grew to five alarms, bringing about 50 firefighters to the scene, including approximately 30 who were off-duty at the time. Crews were able to bring the situation under control and ensure residents were evacuated as safely as possible under the circumstances.

According to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Aging & Independence, Gabriel House first opened in 1999 and has around 100 units for older adults needing assisted living support. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fall River Fire Department, Fall River Police, State Police attached to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.

Our deepest thoughts and sympathies are with the victims, their families, and the entire Fall River community as they cope with this unimagineable loss.

Fire-Related Injuries and Deaths in Massachusetts

Fires in Massachusetts residential buildings can have catastrophic consequences, especially when they affect vulnerable populations like seniors living in assisted facilities. According to state data, Massachusetts sees hundreds of serious residential fires every year, many of which lead to injuries, hospitalizations, and tragic deaths. Older adults and those with limited mobility face greater risks, underscoring the need for robust safety measures, fire drills, and clear evacuation plans. To better understand how fires like this can cause so much harm, here are a few key points about common fire-related injuries:

  • Smoke Inhalation: Smoke is often the deadliest part of a fire. Inhaling toxic gases can quickly overwhelm a person’s respiratory system, leading to unconsciousness or death within minutes. Many fire victims suffer lasting lung damage and require long-term care.

  • Burn Injuries: Burns vary in severity but can cause immense pain, permanent scarring, and the need for multiple surgeries. Victims often need skin grafts and specialized medical support during recovery.

  • Falls and Trauma: In efforts to escape, residents may fall or jump from windows, leading to fractures and head injuries. These secondary injuries can complicate recovery and require extensive rehabilitation.

  • Emotional Trauma: Surviving a deadly fire leaves many people with severe emotional and psychological distress, including PTSD and anxiety. Counseling and community support can be vital for recovery.

  • First Responder Injuries: Firefighters and officers face great danger rescuing victims. They can suffer burns, smoke inhalation, and physical injuries while risking their lives for others.
