Gloucester, MA (September 9, 2025) – A 63-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after a car struck her while she was riding her bicycle in Gloucester on Monday morning, September 8.

Gloucester Police reported the crash happened around 9:30 a.m. in the area of 891 Washington Street. Emergency crews quickly responded and found the bicyclist in need of urgent medical care.

First responders called in a medical helicopter to airlift the injured rider to a nearby hospital. Officials confirmed that she sustained serious injuries, though her current condition has not been released.

The driver of the car stayed at the scene and was also taken to a hospital for evaluation. Authorities have not said whether any charges will be filed in connection with the crash.

Gloucester Fire Chief Eric Smith praised emergency personnel for their quick response and their efforts to stabilize both patients before transport.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

Bicycle Accidents in Gloucester

Gloucester’s North Shore roads are popular with bicyclists, but they also pose significant

safety challenges. Narrow streets, busy intersections, and increased traffic can heighten the risk of collisions between drivers and cyclists. Unfortunately, when a crash happens, it is the bicyclist who faces the greatest danger of serious injury.

Collisions between cars and bicycles often lead to severe harm because cyclists have little protection beyond a helmet. Broken bones, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, and internal injuries are common outcomes. Even when riders survive, the road to recovery can involve lengthy hospital stays, rehabilitation, and emotional distress.

In Massachusetts, state law requires drivers to keep a safe distance when passing cyclists and to remain alert, especially on shared roads. Despite these protections, accidents still happen, often caused by distracted driving, failure to yield, speeding, or poor visibility.

When someone is hurt in a bicycle crash, they may have the right to pursue compensation for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering. A car accident lawyer can help victims by investigating the crash, collecting evidence, and handling communication with insurance companies. Having legal guidance can make a major difference in ensuring fair treatment and financial recovery.
