Holyoke, MA (September 4, 2025) – Multiple people were hospitalized Thursday morning, September 4, after a school van collided with an SUV in Holyoke.

The crash occurred near Lyman St at about 10:30 a.m. Emergency crews arrived to find a Valley Opportunity Council school van carrying a young student and another vehicle that had flipped over during the collision.

Authorities say the student was “childcare age.” Both the child and the van driver were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Officials confirmed the driver sustained minor injuries, while the child was taken as a precaution.

Firefighters used the jaws of life to rescue two people trapped inside the overturned SUV. Crews reported that the extrication lasted nearly 20 minutes before the victims were freed. Those occupants were also taken to the hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.

Police indicated that one driver may have run a red light, contributing to the crash. Captain David Rex of the Holyoke Fire Department noted that this intersection has been the site of numerous prior accidents due to poor visibility and traffic congestion.

The collision remains under investigation as officials work to determine liability. We send our best wishes for recovery to all those injured in this crash.

School Van Accidents in Massachusetts

Accidents involving school transportation are especially concerning because they put children and vulnerable passengers at risk. In Massachusetts, school vans and buses

transport thousands of students each day. Although these vehicles are designed for safety, collisions can still result in significant harm.

Children are more likely to suffer serious injuries in vehicle accidents due to their smaller size and developing bodies. Even minor crashes can cause lasting effects such as concussions, broken bones, and emotional trauma. In cases like the recent Holyoke crash, children are often hospitalized for observation, even if injuries appear minor at first.

One of the most common causes of school van accidents is driver negligence. Running red lights, distracted driving, and speeding remain frequent factors. Poor road design also contributes. In Holyoke, officials have acknowledged that the intersection near Lyman St poses visibility challenges, making it a hotspot for repeated crashes.

Families affected by these incidents often face sudden medical bills, time away from work, and emotional stress. Insurance companies may try to minimize payouts or shift blame, making recovery even harder. That is why speaking with a Massachusetts car accident attorney can be vital. An attorney can gather evidence, determine liability, and advocate for fair compensation. This may include coverage for medical treatment, future care, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Legal support allows families to focus on healing while professionals handle the legal complexities. A lawyer experienced with school transportation accidents understands the unique laws and responsibilities involved, including the duty of care owed to children.
