Jamestown, RI (September 26, 2025) – A Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) bus overturned on its side on Thursday afternoon after a tire failure in Jamestown.
According to the Rhode Island State Police, the crash happened around noon on September 25. Investigators say the bus blew a tire, hit a guardrail, and flipped over near the base of the Jamestown Bridge.
One of the four passengers, Pedro Hernandez of Providence, shared his experience with local reporters. Hernandez said he was sitting on the driver’s side near the back of the bus when the crash occurred. He said the bus struck a barrier and then rolled over.
Hernandez described the terrifying moment, saying he thought the bus might plunge into the water. Fortunately, the vehicle had already passed over the bridge and landed on solid ground.
Emergency crews rushed Hernandez to the hospital, where doctors confirmed a fractured right arm. He also reported additional injuries from hitting metal bars during the rollover.
The bus was traveling on Route 14, providing service to Providence through Jamestown at the time of the accident.
State Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash and will release more details as they become available.
We extend our sincere wishes for recovery to those injured in this incident.
Bus Accidents in Rhode Island
Bus accidents are far less common than car crashes, but when they do occur, the injuries can be severe. In Rhode Island, public transit buses move thousands of passengers daily, often

across bridges and congested routes. A mechanical failure, such as a blown tire, can quickly put riders in danger.
Unlike smaller vehicles, buses are large and difficult to maneuver during emergencies. A sudden tire blowout or mechanical issue often causes a rollover or collision with guardrails. This can lead to broken bones, head injuries, and lasting trauma for those on board. Even passengers seated away from impact points may be thrown into metal fixtures, windows, or the floor, creating additional injuries.
Victims of bus accidents may face significant challenges after a crash. Medical bills, hospital stays, and physical therapy can place a heavy financial burden on families. Some injuries, like spinal damage or fractures, may keep victims out of work for months. Beyond the physical pain, many survivors also struggle with emotional trauma, especially when the crash involves a sudden rollover or near-drowning experience, as in this recent Jamestown incident.
Because bus companies and state transit authorities are involved, these cases can become legally complex. Multiple parties may share responsibility, including the driver, the maintenance team, and even the tire manufacturer. For this reason, working with a skilled bus accident lawyer in Jamestown is crucial. A lawyer can investigate the crash, collect maintenance records, and determine whether negligence played a role. They can also handle communications with insurance providers who may try to minimize compensation.
Compensation in bus accident cases may include coverage for hospital bills, lost income, ongoing rehabilitation, and emotional distress. Victims should not have to shoulder these costs alone when negligence or equipment failure caused the accident. Taking timely legal action ensures that evidence is preserved and that victims receive the support they deserve.
