Lincoln, RI (June 18, 2025) – A vehicle crash on Rhode Island 146 northbound at Exit 8C (Route 99 north to Route 122 toward Woonsocket/Cumberland) was cleared from travel lanes by 5:24 p.m. today following an incident earlier this evening.

Initial reports show a single-vehicle collision occurred near Exit 8C, blocking the ramp and part of the adjacent lanes. Emergency crews and Rhode Island Department of Transportation personnel responded and cleared debris, reopening lanes approximately 45 minutes after the crash. At least one person was transported to an area hospital for the treatment of injuries. At this time, the crash is being investigated.

We hope anyone affected by this crash is safe and receives needed care.

Car Accidents in Rhode Island

In Rhode Island, highway incidents like this are not uncommon, especially on feeder ramps and high-speed surfaces like Route 146. Even a minor single-vehicle crash can quickly block access lanes and cause confusion. Sparse traffic on ramps may reduce secondary collisions, but the risks of debris, spillover effects, and sudden braking remain serious. Let's review some typical challenges drivers face on highway ramps:

  • Rapid Lane Changes: Exit and entrance ramps often require abrupt shifts between lanes. Sudden weaving without signals or sufficient space can cause loss of control or collisions.

  • Inadequate Deceleration Space: Drivers may not have enough room to slow down once entering a ramp. When visible braking happens too late, vehicles can collide or swerve off the roadway.

  • Limited Visibility: Ramps connected with overpasses or curves may obstruct sightlines. Drivers may not see slower or stopped traffic ahead until it’s too late.

  • Debris Hazards: After a crash, debris dumped into travel lanes can cause further crashes if not cleared quickly. The cleanup window is critical to preventing secondary incidents.
