North Kingstown, RI (June 27, 2025) – A man is recovering after a serious crash involving a minibike and a sedan in North Kingstown late Friday morning. On June 27, just after 10:20 a.m., local authorities were called to the intersection of Post Road and Peachtree Road after reports of a collision. According to police, 36-year-old Jonathan Powell was riding his minibike southbound in the wrong direction along Post Road, close to the breakdown lane, when the crash occurred.
For unknown reasons, Powell’s minibike struck the front passenger-side fender of a sedan. The impact sent Powell airborne before he landed on the car’s hood. A 12 News crew at the scene noted that the minibike became wedged in the car’s front wheel, while the windshield was shattered from the force. Personal items including a pair of shoes and a backpack were seen scattered along the roadway.
Emergency medical teams quickly arrived and transported Powell to Rhode Island Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition. Thankfully, the driver of the sedan was not injured. Police have charged Powell with driving under the influence and cited him for refusing to take a blood test and operating an unregistered motorcycle. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances that led up to this incident and what additional factors may have contributed.
Our thoughts are with Jonathan Powell as he recovers, and we hope he heals fully and quickly.
Motorcycle Accidents in Rhode Island

Motorcycle crashes in Rhode Island happen far too often and frequently cause serious injuries or worse for riders. Because motorcyclists do not have the same protection as those in larger vehicles, these incidents can have devastating consequences. Across the state, dozens of bikers are seriously hurt or killed each year. Many of these crashes are linked to impaired riding, operating unregistered bikes, or drivers simply failing to see riders in time. Everyone on the road must do their part to stay alert and ride or drive responsibly. It’s important to know what factors commonly play a role in these accidents. Here are a few key points to keep in mind:
Driving Under the Influence: Operating any vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts everyone at risk. Impaired riders may struggle with balance, judgment, and reaction time, making collisions far more likely. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect a motorcyclist’s ability to control their bike. Riders should always plan ahead for safe transportation if they have been drinking.
Wrong-Way Riding: Traveling in the wrong direction on a road can lead to severe crashes, especially when drivers aren’t expecting oncoming traffic in those lanes. Wrong-way riding may happen because of confusion, impairment, or reckless behavior. Riders must follow lane markings and pay close attention to signage to avoid tragic mistakes.
