Bicycle Accidents in Massachusetts

Each year, Massachusetts sees hundreds of bicycle-related accidents, many of which lead to serious injuries. Cyclists—especially younger riders—are often at a disadvantage when struck by larger vehicles. Many of these crashes happen at intersections, where right-of-way disputes or limited visibility create danger. With more riders using e-bikes, communities are seeing an increase in bike-related incidents requiring emergency care. To understand the consequences of bicycle accidents better, here are some serious injury types victims may face:
Spinal Cord Injuries: A fall from a bicycle after impact can cause trauma to the spine, leading to pain, numbness, or in extreme cases, paralysis. Long-term therapy and treatment are often necessary for recovery.
Broken Bones and Fractures: Cyclists hit by cars often suffer broken legs, arms, or wrists due to the direct force of impact or the fall to the pavement. These injuries can require surgery and extensive rehabilitation.
Facial and Dental Injuries: Without the protection of a vehicle’s frame, riders’ faces are often exposed during a crash. This can lead to broken teeth, fractured cheekbones, or lacerations that may need reconstructive procedures.
Internal Bleeding or Organ Damage: Trauma to the abdomen or chest can cause internal injuries that aren’t visible right away. These injuries are life-threatening and require immediate hospital diagnostics and treatment.
Head Trauma and Concussions: Even with a helmet, cyclists can suffer head injuries. Symptoms like memory loss, headaches, or dizziness may develop over time. Early medical assessment is essential.
Emotional and Psychological Impact: After a crash, many victims—especially young riders—deal with anxiety or depression. This emotional toll can affect school, social life, and family dynamics.
