Car Accidents in Rhode Island

Roadway collisions like this one are an all-too-common occurrence across Rhode Island. From highways to city streets, thousands of crashes happen each year, resulting in injuries and unexpected hardships for victims and their families. Drivers must stay alert, follow traffic laws, and exercise caution to help prevent more tragedies on roads like RI 10. Here are some common highway crash factors to keep in mind:

  • Distracted Driving: Texting or using a phone behind the wheel is one of the leading causes of highway collisions. Looking away from the road for even a few seconds at high speeds can have devastating results.

  • Unsafe Lane Changes: Drivers who weave between lanes or fail to signal can cause sideswipe collisions or multi-vehicle pileups, especially in congested highway areas.

  • Speeding: Driving too fast reduces a driver’s reaction time and increases the impact of a collision. Speeding remains one of the most common contributors to severe highway crashes.

  • Following Too Closely: Tailgating is especially dangerous on busy highways. Without enough space between vehicles, drivers cannot react in time if traffic suddenly slows or stops.

  • Impaired Driving: Alcohol and drugs significantly impair reaction time, judgment, and coordination. Impaired driving is a major cause of injury and fatal crashes throughout Rhode Island.
