Southampton, MA (August 10, 2025) – Emergency crews were called to the scene of a two-vehicle collision on August 8 along College Highway near the Cumberland Farms store. The incident occurred at approximately 3:28 p.m., prompting a response from the Southampton Fire Department and mutual aid from the Easthampton Fire Department.

According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, three people were transported to local hospitals following the crash. One of the victims, identified as 74-year-old Michael R. Laliberte of Southampton, passed away from his injuries after arriving at the hospital. The other two individuals are expected to make full recoveries.

Police temporarily closed College Highway between Gunn Road and Dunkin’ during the investigation, later reopening it Friday night. The Southampton Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police continue to examine the cause of the collision.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Michael R. Laliberte during this difficult time, and we hope the injured parties recover fully.

Car Accidents in Massachusetts

In Massachusetts, car accidents are a serious concern, with thousands of crashes reported each year. The state sees a wide range of incidents, from minor fender benders to fatal collisions, often caused by speeding, impaired driving, or distractions. According to state data, a notable percentage of accidents occur at intersections or involve older drivers. The impact on victims and families can be long-lasting, both emotionally and financially.

When discussing roadway safety, it’s important to consider the following aspects:

  • Intersection Risks: Intersections are frequent sites of collisions due to conflicting traffic movements. Poor visibility, failure to yield, and red-light running contribute significantly to accident rates.

  • Distracted Driving: Mobile phone use, eating, and adjusting in-car systems divert drivers’ attention. Even a few seconds of distraction can result in severe consequences.

  • Older Driver Safety: While many older drivers remain safe behind the wheel, age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time can increase crash risk. Safety programs can help extend mobility while reducing accidents.

  • Weather Hazards: Rain, snow, and ice make roads slippery and limit visibility, increasing the chances of losing control. Drivers should adjust speed and following distances in poor weather.
