Westfield, MA (June 12, 2025) – A late-night fire in Westfield claimed the life of one woman on June 12. Firefighters responded to an apartment blaze at 36 Franklin Street shortly after 10:30 p.m., following reports of heavy smoke and flames erupting from a first-floor unit.
Eyewitnesses at the scene told emergency responders that someone was trapped inside the building. Fire crews immediately began attacking the fire from both the front and rear of the apartment in an effort to reach the person reported missing. Sadly, the woman, who officials said had limited mobility, was found deceased inside the apartment.
Her name has not yet been released, and an investigation into the fire’s cause is now underway, led by the State Department of Fire Services. Police were also on site to assist in securing the area and supporting the emergency response. The blaze was contained before it could spread to neighboring units, but it left visible damage to the structure’s front and rear sections. Authorities have not confirmed whether other tenants were displaced or injured during the fire.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends mourning this loss.
Residential Fires in Massachusetts

In Massachusetts, residential fires are a leading source of injury and fatality across the state, particularly during late evening and early morning hours. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services regularly reports on the importance of fire prevention, especially for older adults and individuals with physical limitations who may have trouble evacuating quickly in an emergency. Understanding the risks can help save lives. Here are key safety reminders related to fire hazards:
Mobility Challenges During Emergencies: Individuals with limited mobility face greater danger during fires due to the time and assistance required to escape. Families and landlords should have evacuation plans that include specific strategies for residents who may need help getting out.
Importance of Working Smoke Alarms: Functional smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death. The state fire code mandates their presence in residential buildings. Regularly testing alarms and changing batteries is essential, particularly for multi-unit dwellings.
Clear Escape RoutesL Cluttered hallways or blocked doorways can hinder evacuation. Landlords and tenants alike should ensure that exits are always accessible and that escape paths are unobstructed.
Fire Prevention Plans for Apartment Buildings: Property managers should establish clear emergency response plans, post evacuation maps, and conduct regular safety checks. Residents should also be informed about whom to contact in case of emergency or malfunctioning alarms.
If your loved one has been harmed in a fire due to unsafe housing or delayed emergency response, contact a personal injury attorney right away. Whether dealing with injuries or loss, legal support can ensure that your family’s rights are protected. It’s important to start gathering evidence and reviewing the case as soon as possible to preserve important details that may affect your legal options.
