Gloucester, MA (July 1, 2025) – Tragedy struck the Gloucester community on Monday, June 30, when a wrong-way driver caused a violent head-on collision on Route 128, leaving five people injured. According to Gloucester Mayor Greg Verga, an 80-year-old man was driving the wrong direction across the Route 128 bridge over the Annisquam River when his vehicle collided head-on with another car. The impact caused one of the cars to flip onto its roof, scattering debris including tires, rims, glass, and springs across the bridge.

Massachusetts State Police, along with Gloucester police and fire departments, rushed to the scene to find two people trapped inside the wrecked cars. Firefighters worked quickly to extricate the victims and provide urgent medical care. An 18-year-old man was airlifted to a Boston hospital in critical condition. Two 19-year-old women who were in the other car were initially treated at Beverly Hospital; one has since been transferred to Tufts New England Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition, while the other has been released.

The elderly driver responsible for the wrong-way crash was transported to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington and is also in critical condition. Another 18-year-old man involved in the collision was taken to a local hospital, though his current condition is unknown. Witnesses described a terrifying scene, with one bystander, Caydence Martin, recalling the desperate pleas for help as she arrived moments after the crash.

Our hearts go out to the victims and their families as they face this painful time.

Car Accidents in Massachusetts

Serious car accidents like this continue to impact countless families across Massachusetts. According to state crash data, head-on collisions, though less common than other types of crashes, account for a disproportionate number of severe injuries and fatalities. Highways and bridges can pose unique risks when drivers become disoriented, highlighting the importance of vigilance behind the wheel. It’s crucial to be informed about the dangers that can result from major crashes. Here are some of the most common causes of head-on collisions:

  • Wrong-Way Driving: One of the deadliest causes of head-on accidents is wrong-way driving. This often happens when drivers become confused by poor signage, drive under the influence, or experience medical emergencies. Even at moderate speeds, the force of a head-on impact can be catastrophic for everyone involved.

  • Fatigue and Drowsy Driving: Falling asleep at the wheel is an overlooked factor in serious crashes. When a tired driver drifts into oncoming lanes, the outcome can be devastating. Drivers should always rest before long trips and take breaks when feeling drowsy to avoid tragedy.

  • Distracted Driving: Looking at a phone, adjusting the radio, or eating while driving can divert attention for just a few seconds. On highways, this is enough time for a vehicle to cross a median or center line, resulting in a head-on impact that can change lives forever.

  • Driving Under the Influence: Alcohol and drugs greatly impair a driver’s ability to judge distances, maintain lanes, and react quickly. Drunk driving remains one of the leading factors in deadly head-on crashes. Staying sober behind the wheel saves lives.

After any serious accident, victims should connect with a dedicated personal injury attorney without delay. An experienced car accident attorney can step in to protect your rights, collect evidence, and ensure insurance companies do not take advantage of you during such a vulnerable time. Getting trusted legal help as soon as possible increases your chance of a fair outcome.
